[UPDATED: Start date postponed one week from 25th September to 2nd October]
Did you always want to learn to meditate but never got around to it? This is your chance to get started with a new healthy habit, and you won't be doing it alone! Monday 2nd of October marks the start of a new beginners' course in meditation. By students for students — but UvA employees and non-students can join as well.
Meditation has been consistently found to have a positive impact on stress levels, concentration, acceptance, and overall life satisfaction. Once a week, for four weeks, you'll get more insight into how your mind works. Together with a few enthusiastic student meditators, you'll learn to navigate thought loops, manage downward spirals, and find peace in a constantly active mind. We will help you cultivate living in the present, embracing acceptance, and letting go of constant worries. The emphasis of the course will be on giving clear and down-to-earth instructions so everyone can make the practice their own.
Curious? Sign up for the Beginners' Meditation Course!
Date, time and location:
The course will be given on Monday evenings on the following dates:
- Monday, October 2nd, 17:15 - 18:45
- Monday, October 9th, 17:15 - 18:45
- Monday, October 16th, 17:15 - 18:45
- Monday, October 23rd, 17:15 - 18:45
All sessions will take place in-person at the Roeterseiland campus (REC). We'll send you the exact rooms in advance. There will be a short tea break in the middle of the sessions. If you sign up, please make sure that you can attend all or most of the sessions, since the sessions build on top of each other and there are limited spots. This is also important for the group and the teachers' motivation. Also make sure that you have the space in your life to dedicate 10-20 minutes daily to building a meditation practice.
Contents of the course
We will teach you the basics of breath meditation. After taking the beginners' course, you'll have learned techniques and concepts that enable you to practice meditation effectively on your own. We provide support and encouragement for building a regular meditation habit. Among other things we discuss concepts such as the monkey mind, mindfulness, kindness and intention.
The course is free for members; you can become a member for 10 euros, or for 3 years for 15 euros. We need members to apply for money from the university, in order to cover our costs for all the activities we organise. Things like the daily guided meditations, the courses, and the community events.
You can become a member while signing up for the course.
The sign-ups are closed.
You will receive an email of confirmation three days before the course. Please sign up before Wednesday 27th of September, because we will see then if we have enough sign-ups to run the course or if we want to postpone it. We teach a Beginners' course approximately once a semester and there are limited spots, so we recommend signing up early to avoid missing out. After the end of the course, if you are interested, you will have a sufficient level to learn how to guide meditations for other people.
